What are Community Subgroups?
Note: This feature is only available for VidApp Platform clients.
Subgroups allow you to divide your main community into smaller, focused spaces for specific topics, cohorts, or interest groups. This helps create more relevant conversations and a less-crowded feed for your members.
Each subgroup can have its own unique Header Image to give it a distinct look and feel.
Understanding the Three Group Types
There are three types of subgroups you can create:
| Group Type | How to Join | Can Members Leave? | Common Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main | Members are joined by default. | No | General announcements, a "Welcome" group for everyone. |
| Open | Members are joined by default. | Yes | Topic-specific feeds (e.g., "Q&A," "News") that are relevant to most, but not all, members. |
| Opt-in | Members must manually join. | Yes | Niche topics, advanced cohorts, or special interest groups (e.g., "Recipes," "2026 challenge"). |
How to Set Up Subgroups (for Admins)
- Navigate to your Community management area in the Builder.
- Give your group a name and description.
- Upload a Thumbnail and Header Image.
- Choose the Group Type (Open or Opt-in).
- Save the group.
How Subgroups Work for Members
- Finding Groups: Members can see all available subgroups on the "Explore Community" page. This screen will show:
- The groups they are already in.
- The "Opt-in" groups they can optionally join.
- Joining & Access: When a member joins an "Opt-in" group, they immediately gain access and can begin interacting with the content and other members.
- Leaving Groups: A member can choose to leave any Open or Opt-in group at any time. They cannot leave the Main group.
- Notifications: Notifications are tailored to the groups a member belongs to. A member will only receive notifications for conversations in their joined groups, and these will respect the global notification preferences they've configured in their Profile.
